Who doesn’t love a good hunk of garlic as an addition to pretty much any dish? When it comes to cooking with garlic, you can always take the easy route, and buy some pre-minced garlic from the store. Or, you can do a few extra steps, and make an oven-roasted garlic that will knock your socks off.
Recipe developer Jennine Rye developed this simple oven-roasted garlic recipe that pairs well with various foods. “I love how simple it is to make, and how versatile and delicious roasted garlic is! Roasting the garlic really mellows out the overwhelming flavor and breaks down the sugars, which caramelize beautifully,” Rye shares. “It really is a superior flavor to raw garlic, you can even just spread it on toast like butter, and it tastes incredible.”
“Roasting garlic changes the chemical structure of it, making it much less pungent,” she shares. “Instead, it is mild, sweeter, and almost butter-like. It is also much easier to digest when it is roasted, which is a plus,” Rye explains.

Gather the ingredients for this simple oven-roasted garlic recipe
There are only a few ingredients that you will need to make this wonderful dish, including 1 garlic bulb, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Once you have those things, you can make this simple oven-roasted garlic.
Prep and season the garlic bulb
To get started, preheat your oven to 375 F. While you wait for oven to get hot, slice off the top ¼ of the bulb, including the stem, and then strip and discard the outer peel.
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, and place the garlic bulb on top with the cut side facing up. Drizzle the olive oil over the garlic, then season with a bit of salt and pepper to taste.
Wrap the bulb in foil and cook
Once you’ve finished seasoning, gently wrap the garlic bulb in the foil and pop it into your preheated oven for 45 minutes.
When the garlic is almost finished cooking, peek at it, and make sure the cloves are slightly browned and soft to the touch. Then, remove the garlic from the oven.
Serve and enjoy
You can enjoy the garlic fresh out of the oven or store it for later uses. The great part about this recipe is that you can use the garlic in multiple ways. “Roasted garlic has so many great uses. It can be served as it is, for people to pick out the cloves with toothpicks and eat them unadulterated, or spread on toast,” Rye shares. “It can be used to make or add to sauces, such as roasted garlic aioli or marinara sauce. It’s also great in soups and stews, or basically, any dish that uses raw garlic. One of my personal favorites is roasted garlic on top of baked Camembert.”
If you have leftovers, don’t throw them out. “Freshly roasted garlic bulbs can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. If you want to keep them for longer, you can remove the individual cloves, place them in a jar and cover them in olive oil,” Rye notes. “This way, they will safely last for up to 1 month in the fridge.”
